Types of adjustments
Because no two patients are alike, we have developed a variety of chiropractic treatments that work with the individual’s condition. In general, there are two ways of realigning joints.

A. Joint adjustment with a quick painless “snapping sound.” These specific manipulations help realign and unstuck joints to relieve pain and allow for normal joint movement. Most patients ask, “What is that noise?” The “snapping sound” a joint makes is actually gas moving quickly within the joint space. This gas is under pressure so it moves rapidly when the joint shifts. It is similar to the noise made when you pop a cork from a bottle of champagne.
B. Non-force alignments, sometimes called mobilizations, are methods of realignment that cause no “snapping noise.” Here’s an example of how these methods work. Let’s say you want to move a big boat. Obviously, you wouldn’t hit it with a sledgehammer; instead you would lean and push against the boat until it starts to move. These types of forces can also be used to realign the spine and are sometimes preferred by patients who dislike the more aggressive approaches.
C. Activator method: this is another way we help patients with “snapping.” This technique employs a hand-held device that tends to force the vertebrae into alignment. The method is comfortable and well accepted by patients.
